The draw for the FIFA World Cup 2026 Draw took place on December 5, 2025 at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. It determined all 12 groups and the bracket pathways. Here is everything about how the draw worked and what the results mean.
THE DRAW CEREMONY
The draw was held at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC. It was broadcast globally. The ceremony was hosted by FIFA and featured former players and public figures drawing the numbered balls from the pots. FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström presided over the draw alongside a technical host.
The Kennedy Center was chosen because Washington DC is the capital of the USA, the primary host nation and the country contributing 78 of the 104 matches.
THE FOUR POTS
FIFA divided the 48 qualified teams into four pots of 12 teams each before the draw. The pots were based on FIFA world rankings from November 2025.
Pot 1 contained the highest-ranked teams including the three host nations (USA, Mexico, Canada) who were seeded regardless of ranking, plus Spain, France, England, Brazil, Argentina, Portugal, Netherlands and others.
Pot 2 contained the next 12 ranked teams.
Pots 3 and 4 contained the remaining teams in ranking order.
Each group received one team from each pot. This prevented top teams from meeting each other in the group stage.
SPECIAL BRACKET SEEDING
FIFA made a specific decision at the draw to separate the two highest-ranked non-host teams: Spain (ranked 1st) and Argentina (ranked 2nd). They were placed in separate bracket pathways. This guarantees Spain and Argentina cannot meet before the Final.
France (ranked 3rd) and England (ranked 4th) were also placed in separate bracket pathways. They cannot meet before the semifinals.
This design means the four biggest favorites are distributed across the bracket to maximize the chance of seeing high-quality matches in the late stages rather than early eliminations.
THE 12 GROUPS CONFIRMED
The draw produced these 12 groups:
A: Mexico, South Africa, South Korea, UEFA PO-D Winner
B: Canada, Switzerland, Qatar, UEFA PO-A Winner
C: Brazil, Morocco, Scotland, Haiti
D: USA, Paraguay, Australia, UEFA PO-C Winner
E: Germany, Curaçao, Ivory Coast, Ecuador
F: Netherlands, Iran, New Zealand, UEFA PO-B Winner
G: Belgium, Egypt (plus two drawn teams)
H: Spain, Saudi Arabia, Uruguay, Cape Verde
I: France, Senegal, Norway, IC PO-2 Winner
J: Argentina, Algeria, Austria, Jordan
K: Portugal, Colombia, Uzbekistan, IC PO-1 Winner

SIX TEAMS TO BE CONFIRMED
At the time of the draw, six spots were still open. Four teams from UEFA playoffs (March 26 and 31, 2026) and two teams from Intercontinental playoffs (same dates, Guadalajara) were drawn as placeholder positions. These six spots will be confirmed in late March 2026.
WHAT THE GROUPS MEAN TACTICALLY
Spain being in Group H means their potential knockout path avoids Argentina until the Final. England in Group L puts them in the opposite bracket half from Spain. The Group of Death in Group I (France, Senegal, Norway) means one top team is eliminated in the group stage.
The draw results shaped the entire narrative and structure of the 2026 tournament before a ball had been kicked.
